Construction has begun on a new data center for Microsoft Corp.’s Project Ginger West, its campus in West Des Moines, information from the city’s commercial building permit data shows.

The permit valued at $264.7 million was among the 75 commercial building permits issued in the Des Moines area in June. The value of commercial permits issued by 13 Des Moines-area communities and Polk County totaled more than $499.2 million; in the first six months of 2021, commercial permits valued at more than $1.3 billion have been issued.

The permit for Microsoft is for the construction a 184,596-square-foot building at Project Ginger West, 11100 Booneville Road in West Des Moines. The data center is part of a 188-acre campus.

Also included in June’s commercial building permits were:

A pedestrian underpass is planned under Miller Drive that will be able to be used by people walking to and from the stadium and nearby parking facilities. The nearly 53-acre parcel on which the stadium is being constructed is owned by Southeast Polk. The land had been used as a dedicated cross-country course. Modifications are planned to the course, according to a city document. RDG Planning & Design designed the stadium.
