The Polk County Health Department has released its 2023-2024 annual report, which highlights the department’s efforts to support public health, including addressing community issues and fostering health equity.

Polk County’s initiatives over the last year included the Ribbons of Hope Program, which provided over 1,800 free cancer screenings; the Talk It Up, Lock It Up Gun Safety Campaign, which distributed over 1,700 free gun locks at more than 40 locations; and the Lead Hazard Home Repair Program that conducted 50 home repairs to remove lead hazards.

Community health workers from Polk County also helped engage Latino residents through culturally tailored education on brain health and Alzheimer’s awareness, according to the report.

During the 2023-24 fiscal year, the department’s services also included:

  • Distributing 500 harm reduction kits and 300 hygiene kits
  • Administering 2,418 childhood immunizations and 3,281 travel-related vaccinations
  • Investigating 5,108 cases of sexually transmitted infections
  • Responding to 15 outbreaks, including respiratory and foodborne illnesses

“As I reflect on the past year, I am incredibly proud of the resilience and dedication our team has shown in meeting challenges and bringing forward initiatives that strengthen our community,” Helen Eddy, Polk County Health Department director, said in a prepared statement. “This report showcases the impactful work we’ve done together to create conditions for all residents to live healthy lives.”
