West Des Moines City Manager Tom Hadden said that nearly $8 million has been raised to fund the project, which will be built with a combination of public and private financing. The city plans to use about $18.5 million in hotel-motel tax revenues and $1.5 million in potential grant funding along with $10 million in corporate and individual donations, according to a release.
The facility will feature two ice hockey rinks with room for up to four sheets of ice, three indoor soccer fields, three indoor basketball courts, availability for six volleyball courts, five outdoor soccer fields, locker rooms and amenities, 3,000 square feet of meeting space, 20,000 square feet of exhibit space and a 3,000-seat main arena with stage.
“Our plan is to use the dollars collected from people visiting our city to fund a regional attraction that provides a place for our kids to participate in athletics and much needed space for adult sports, smaller conventions, trade shows and corporate gatherings,” Hadden said in a statement.
“MidAmerican Energy is more than an energy provider, we are very much part of the communities we serve,” Kathryn Kunert, a MidAmerican Co. vice president, said in a statement.
“That’s why we are proud to support projects that promote economic development through strengthening and enhancing the quality of life for our customers and communities.”
The proposed 60-acre project site is located along the south side of Grand Avenue and east of Jordan Creek Parkway a little more than two miles south of Jordan Creek Town Center and nearly two miles west of Interstate 35.
Renderings are now available that show the interior and exterior of the facility as well as some of the amenities that will be a part of the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex. For more information, visit the RecPlex website.
