Scott Syroka has resigned from the Johnston City Council, to which he was elected in 2019. Syroka has accepted a position to work in the federal Office of Personnel Management for the Biden administration, the city announced in a news release. “When I ran, I wanted to help modernize city government, support small business development, and ensure responsible stewardship of natural resources,” Syroka said in a prepared statement. “Two years later, we have invested in the Broadband Visioning Study to improve connectivity for residents, offered small business relief grants for businesses during the pandemic, and increased special needs inclusivity with adult-sized changing tables in the new Johnston Town Center restrooms.” The Johnston City Council, during a special meeting on Feb. 18, is expected to appoint former council member John Temple to fill the seat on a temporary basis. In November, an election will be held to fill the seat for the rest of its term, which ends Dec. 31, 2023. Residents, however, can petition the council to hold a special election before November.
