A new drive-in movie venue opens at Valley West Mall in West Des Moines on Sunday with a showing of “Field of Dreams,” the baseball classic filmed in Dyersville, Iowa.

Actor Dwier Brown, who played John Kinsella (actor Kevin Costner’s dad in the movie), will make a special appearance on Sunday to introduce the season’s first movie and will be available to meet attendees, according to a news release.

Earlier this year, John Putbrese, president of HD on the Go, proposed transforming the parking lot south of the building that once housed Younkers department store into a drive-in movie venue. Valley West Mall is located at 1551 Valley West Drive in West Des Moines.

A mobile 10-foot-tall by 36-foot-wide LED screen will be located at the south end of the parking area with the screen facing the mall. Up to 98 vehicles will be able to park in the area; 75 spots will be available at the front of the venue for people to bring chairs and sit outside. A play area for children will also be available. Food and beverage vendors will be on-site, including a bar for those 21 and older.

Hy-Vee Inc. is the title sponsor of the new venue, now called Hy-Vee Drive-In Theater at Valley West Mall.

Three movies will play every Thursday through Sunday with a children’s movie in the afternoon and two features in the evening. The venue will be available to rent for private use Monday through Wednesday for groups and businesses to hold fundraising events or special employee nights.

“As things slowly start to return to normal, Hy-Vee wants to help people get out of the house in a safe and COVID-friendly manner,” Anna Stoermer, district vice president of Hy-Vee’s Des Moines West district, said in a prepared statement. “By bringing back the experience of a nostalgic, drive-in movie theater, we believe we can help families create memories while making the most of their summer.”

Some of the other movies that will be shown during the summer are “Iron Man,” “Caddyshack” and “The Blues Brothers.”
