David Fisher, known for growing the family flooring business and his many volunteering endeavors, died May 30. He was 84. According to his obituary published by Iles Dunn’s Chapel, Fisher was born in Boone on Dec. 7, 1936. He graduated from Grinnell College in 1959 and earned his law degree at the University of Iowa in 1962. After serving in the National Guard at Fort Polk, La., he returned to Iowa and began working at the Onthank Co. in 1963, with his father-in-law, George Onthank. Fisher would go on to become company president from 1977 to 2012, ushering in a period of growth for the company. Fisher served as president of the National I Club and served on the Iowa Board of Regents and the University of Iowa Foundation. Fisher also was a longtime member of Wakonda Club, where he served as president from 1995 to 1996. According to his obituary, Fisher loved playing golf, sprinkle doughnuts from Clear Lake, a champagne birthday cake from Hiland Bakery, Frank Sinatra and the Iowa Hawkeyes. His biggest passion was his family. He is survived by his wife, Dorie; two daughters and a son; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A celebration of life service was scheduled for this afternoon at Glen Oaks Country Club. Memorials can be directed to the YMCA of Greater Des Moines and the State University of Iowa Foundation to benefit the David J. and Dorie Onthank Fisher Scholarship Fund.
