Kickoff party set for Saturday for artist-in-residency launch project in Dogtown
A kickoff party is planned for Saturday to celebrate the launch project of a collaboration among Invest DSM, Bravo Greater Des Moines and Group Creative Services. The groups have worked for months to solidify their artist-in-residency program, which was created to maximize the effect that art, culture and heritage have on advancing regional priorities. The launch project, Color Your Palate, features interactive sidewalk art between 23rd and 25th streets along University Avenue, an area known as Dogtown in the Drake University neighborhood. The artist-in-residence, Eleanor Kahn, was chosen last fall. According to Kahn, a Chicago-based artist, the project facilitates a discussion about food and culture through art. The temporary sidewalk paintings are expected to last six to eight weeks. The project also includes a series of block parties replicating the art throughout the neighborhood. “The project is designed to get people to interact with the art and each other,” said Amber Lynch, executive director of Invest DSM. “We hope that this brings a greater awareness to Dogtown and all that it has to offer as a dining and entertainment district for residents and visitors.” The kickoff party is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. in the Lucky Horse Beer & Burgers parking lot at 2331 University Ave.
