Des Moines International Airport Executive Director Kevin Foley pulled into the airport about 7:25 a.m. Jan. 16 when it hit him: He forgot his cellphone at home, 15 minutes away.

Not wanting to risk missing an emergency call, he turned around and headed back. As he drove through the airport, he noticed that there was plenty of parking available, despite the fact there was snow on the ground and some locals might already be making plans to escape the cold.

When he got back at 8:30, it was a different story. The parking area was already on the packed side of things, and Foley informally declared the beginning of the spring break runup had begun.

From now through April, expect more traffic in the terminal and in the parking lots and garages.
