Coleman, who is currently vice president of operations support and assistant hospital administrator with Kaiser Permanente in San Bernardino County, Calif., was one of two finalists for the job.
The board voted 6-0 to offer Coleman the position. Board member Rocky Sposato was absent from the meeting. The board, which met in closed session on Tuesday to discuss the search, took its vote Thursday with no discussion.
Coleman, a native of Southern California, served for 20 years in the U.S. Navy, serving two full sea tours in the Persian Gulf before earning a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in public health administration and becoming a commissioned naval officer. Among more senior roles, he was director of human resources at a U.S. naval hospital Yokosuka, Japan, and chief financial officer and executive board member at Naval Hospital Beaufort in South Carolina. In his current role with Kaiser Permanente, he oversees multiple departments in two medical centers totaling 460 licensed beds, 16 medical office buildings and nine mental health facilities across a 65-mile geographic area.
In the role of president and CEO of Broadlawns, Coleman will oversee the public hospital’s 100 doctors and more than 1,200 employees.
Coleman was chosen over Cory Geffre, vice president and chief nursing officer at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Both men visited Des Moines and participated in public forums as part of the interview process. They were selected as finalists during a search that drew 40 candidates for the hospital’s top job.
Former President and CEO Jody Jenner retired in April after 15 years. Since then, Karl Vilums has served as interim president and CEO. He has served as chief financial officer at Broadlawns since 2014.
From here the recruitment firm that oversaw the search, Witt Kieffer, will reach out to Coleman with the board’s offer. Once a contract is signed by Coleman and the board, a formal announcement will be made, hospital officials said after Thursday’s meeting.
