The 17,712-square-foot greenhouse facility will replace an existing one at 2501 Maury St. The 2501 Maury St. property is expected to sold and redeveloped, according to a city document. The city of Des Moines plans on building a new greenhouse on about 3 acres of undeveloped ground southeast of Southeast 15th and Maury streets, officials said this week.
The new facility will include 14,256 square feet of greenhouse production space and 3,456 square feet of space for offices, volunteer space, storage and restrooms.
The city greenhouse annually grows over 230,000 flowers and other plants that are placed in public spaces such as right-of-ways, street corners, parkways and land owned by nonprofit groups and the school district. The city’s parks department oversees operations of the greenhouse.
Construction costs are estimated at about $2 million.
The greenhouse will be built in an area being developed as a complex of city buildings. The Richard A. Clark Municipal Service Center is located about one block north at 1551 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. The Municipal Service Center II is under construction at 1700 Maury St.
The new greenhouse facility has been designed to be environmentally sustainable, Anna Squier, project architect with MA Architecture, told the Urban Design Review Board this week. “The project’s goal is to be operationally net zero carbon, mostly achieving that through an all-electric building.”
About 83% of electricity supplied by MidAmerican Energy Co. is generated by wind, according to information provided to board members. In addition, the city of Des Moines is considering installing solar panels for the city buildings in the area.
Construction of the greenhouse is expected to begin in the spring and be completed by October 2022.
The Urban Design Review Board approved the project’s final design.
The board also approved the final designs for Genesis Health Club, a Kansas-based company that plans to open a fitness center at Southridge Mall. The center will include five high school-sized basketball courts, restrooms, workout studios and a five-lane, 25-yard lap pool.
