A snapshot of construction projects proposed in Des Moines area

The following is a look at development projects planned in the Des Moines area. The projects, broken down by city, include both new developments and updates or expansions to existing facilities.

Altoona

• The City Council this week approved the site plan for Facebook Inc.’s new data center at 25th Street Northwest and 34th Avenue Northwest. The data center (rendering at right), which will be build in the shape of a capital letter H, is the last one planned on property currently owned by Facebook. The building will have a 600,260-square-foot footprint and a total area of 980,000 square feet, according to city documents. There will be 220 parking spaces adjacent to the building. A guard shack is planned near the 25th Street entrance. The site will be secured with a 10-foot-tall decorative metal fence. The site has been graded.

• The council also approved the site plan for a 300,000-square-foot warehouse that will be built at 2550 21st Street N.W. The warehouse, which will be built by Graham Group Inc., is planned on a 20-acre site zoned for limited industrial. The Graham Group has constructed three other warehouses in the development.

• The council also approved requests related to the construction of a Kwik Star convenience store on about 7 acres between 21st Street Northwest and Northeast Hubbell Avenue. The Kwik Star would include fuel pumps for automobiles and semitrailer trucks and parking for semis. The council approved rezoning the land and the site plan for the proposed development.

Pleasant Hill

• The Planning and Zoning Commission this week approved the preliminary and final plat for 4 acres located at 1101 N.E. 56th Street. A Kwik Star convenience store and fuel pumps are proposed on the site, which is zoned for regional commercial.

West Des Moines

• The City Council this week approved the final plat for Village on Jordan Creek, located on the southwest corner of Jordan Creek Parkway and Ashworth Road. The plat divides the 11-acre parcel into three lots, an outlot and street lot. A $20 million to $30 million commercial and residential development is planned on the site. The commercial development will be anchored by Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, a New Orleans-based steakhouse chain. The project’s developer is CRG Residential, located in Carmel, Ind.

• The council also approved a comprehensive land use map amendment for Jordan Ridge, a nearly 150-acre development planned north of Booneville Road and west of South Jordan Creek Parkway. About 14 acres will be zoned for office development; 57 acres for single-family residences; and 63 acres for medium density residential. Jordan Ridge LLC, managed by Michael Pierson of Burlington, recently purchased the property.
