The World Food Prize is scheduled to announce the winner of its $250,000 laureate prize on June 11. The announcement is planned for 9 a.m. CDT on the World Food Prize’s website, www.worldfoodprize.org/live. Commonly called the “Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture,” the award recognizes an individual for their contributions to fighting global hunger through improving quality, quantity or availability of food. The award will be presented during the World Food Prize Borlaug Dialogue Symposium, scheduled for Oct. 14-20 in Des Moines. It is named after World Food Prize founder and Nobel Peace Prize winner Normal Borlaug, whose work on high-yield, disease-resistant crop strains helped to more than double world food production between 1960 and 1990. Borlaug died in 2009. The annual symposium attracts more than 1,200 people, including scientific experts, policymakers, business executives and farmers, from 65 countries. U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue are scheduled to speak during the June 11 ceremony.
