Broadlawns’ Harvey awarded UI’s 2020 Distinguished Alumni Service Award
The University of Iowa presented Dr. Hayley Harvey, section chief and director of dental education at Broadlawns Medical Center and a College of Dentistry alum, with the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Service Award. The award is granted to UI graduates or former students for specific and meritorious service to their university, community, state or nation. At Broadlawns, Harvey has been a champion for increasing access to dental care and improving the oral health of underserved populations. Read more about Harvey and her award.

2020 Women of Achievement honorees announced: Women Lead Change last week announced this year’s Women of Achievement honorees. The three newest honorees are: Sue M. Wilson Brown, leader of the suffrage movement advocating for African-American women on the local, state and national level; Zada Mary Cooper, pharmacist, educator and champion for women in science; and Joy Cole Corning, Iowa’s 44th lieutenant governor. The honorees will be commemorated with permanent plaques on the Iowa Women of Achievement Bridge in downtown Des Moines.

Iowa Boys & Girls Clubs CEO accepts position with national organization: Jodie Warth, the most recent CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa, has transitioned to a new position with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Starting today, Warth will serve in the newly established role of national director for quality assurance, child and club safety, where she will focus on enhancing safety protocols in all clubs across the nation. A search for a new CEO for Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa will begin in September.

IPR’s Myrna Johnson joins NPR board of directors: Last week, NPR announced the election of Iowa Public Radio Executive Director Myrna Johnson to the NPR board of directors. Johnson will serve a three-year term beginning in November 2020. NPR’s 23-member board of directors comprises 12 member directors who are managers of NPR Member stations and are elected to the board by their fellow member stations, nine public directors who are prominent members of the public selected by the board and confirmed by NPR member stations, the NPR foundation chair, and the NPR president and CEO. Read the full press release from NPR.

Former Iowa revenue director named to Electronic Tax Administration committee: Courtney Kay-Decker, director of the Iowa Department of Revenue from 2011 to 2019, was selected by the Internal Revenue Service as one of 10 new members of the Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee. Kay-Decker will serve as vice chair for the committee’s new working year, which begins this month. Kay-Decker is currently of counsel at Lane & Waterman LLP in Davenport.

The Iowa Center launches new financial literacy programs: This fall, the Iowa Center will launch two new financial literacy sessions geared toward small business owners. The first, “Always Ready,” is a working session for anyone who’s been denied a loan or wants to get their financials on track. The second, “Financially Savvy,” is a multisession course on best practices for whole financial management. The virtual educational sessions will be held year-round and are open to any small business leader who is ready to realize greater potential through increased financial understanding. The STEM Next Opportunity Fund announced a multiyear $50,000 grant to the Iowa Afterschool Alliance as part of the Million Girls Moonshot, an initiative launched by the Intel Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

Last week, lawmakers introduced the I Am Vanessa Guillén Act, legislation that would reform how the military handles sexual assault and harassment.
