The Iowa Center for Children’s Justice has received a $10,000 challenge grant from the Mid-Iowa Health Foundation to help support the center’s work in Central Iowa. The Iowa Center for Children’s Justice, which received nonprofit status in June, helps to ensure the voices of Central Iowa children are heard in high-conflict divorces and custody cases. Attorneys work one-on-one with children to listen, support and advocate for child-focused resolutions. Previously this work was done in affiliation with Kids First Iowa, based in Cedar Rapids. The challenge grant will help leverage needed gifts to begin the organization’s work in supporting Des Moines-area children experiencing a divorce in their family. Iowa Center for Children’s Justice elevates children’s views in custody matters and promotes child-focused solutions through legal representation, education and alternative dispute resolution. In 2019, nearly 1,000 divorces involving children were filed in Polk County and more than 800 children attended an ICCJ workshop.
