Aldi Inc. is scheduled to open its new grocery store in Altoona on Friday, the company announced in a news release.

Construction of the store began last summer soon after the company bought the 2.2-acre parcel for $1.87 million. The new store is located south of Adventure Bay Waterpark at Adventureland Park.

Aldi, whose U.S. headquarters is located in Batavia, Ill., is a discount grocery store with more than 2,000 stores in 38 states.

The company’s goal is to become the third-largest grocery chain in the U.S. by 2022, it has said in its news releases. In 2017, the company unveiled a $5 billion, five-year expansion strategy to reach that goal.

The new Altoona store is part of the company’s expansion strategy.

The new store’s hours will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The Altoona store will also offer curbside grocery pickup beginning Feb. 5.
