An initiative to raise about $270,000 to create the Waveland Trolley Loop has reached 80% of its fundraising goal, supporters announced. The Waveland Trolley Loop will transform an area near Waveland Golf Course into a park-like setting that will include an interactive streetcar sculpture with interpretive signage. The project began more than four years ago as a grassroots initiative led by community historians and streetcar advocates who wanted to preserve and recognize the significant historical contribution made by the city’s streetcar and trolley system. “Memorializing trolley history in Des Moines has been a dream of mine for years,” Earl Short, co-chair of the effort and son of a former streetcar operator, said in a prepared statement. The group has raised more than $215,000 from nearly 200 individuals, corporations and foundations.
