‘LOVE’ sculpture added to downtown park
The Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines has a new addition: On Thursday, workers installed the sculpture “LOVE” by artist Robert Indiana in the northwest section of the park. Local philanthropists John and Mary Pappajohn donated the money to buy the artwork. The cost of the sculpture was not disclosed. The sculpture, Indiana’s signature work, is among the most recognized of pop images. The Museum of Modern Art selected an image of LOVE as its Christmas card in 1965. In 1973, the U.S. Postal Service created a stamp with an image of the sculpture on it. Indiana died in 2018. “LOVE – I cannot imagine a more fitting gift as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park this year,” said Jeff Fleming, Des Moines Art Center director.
