Des Moines Area Community College students now ride free on DART buses, under a new agreement between the community college and DART. The agreement, which also enables all DMACC employees to ride any route free, puts DMACC on a par with other Greater Des Moines campuses — among them Drake University, Grand View University and Des Moines Public Schools — which already provide free passes to their students. “Three-hundred students so far have gotten the pass, so we’ve got a lot of initial momentum,” said DMACC President Rob Denson, who rode a DART bus today as part of a metro bus tour to highlight the new student benefit. “They’re remarkably comfortable, and they’ve got great Wi-Fi.” Students and staff must obtain a pass at any of the DMACC campuses to use the service; non-metro DMACC students can also use the service. More than 90 trips have already been made by students since Friday. DART officials will work with DMACC in developing potential new routes, Denson said. One now being considered will link DMACC’s Urban Campus with its Capitol Center campus east of downtown. The one-year agreement between DART and DMACC and will be renewable on an annual basis.
