Reuters: Iowa leads hog confinement boom
Even as hundreds march on the Statehouse to demand a moratorium on hog confinement facilities, the nation’s leading hog industry is in its biggest building boom in five years in Iowa, Reuters reported. The main reason: cheap feed and strong exports. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported that last year farmers built 451 hog confinements capable of holding more than 1,250 hogs, up 12 percent from the year before.
