Deviled eggs have become a stable at holiday gatherings in our family. This year, not surprisingly, the cost to make them was much higher than in previous years. Why? The price of mayonnaise was 25% higher than it was just three months ago. According to a recent article by Jaewon Kang in the Wall Street Journal, mayonnaise is among the pantry staples that have experienced steep price increases in recent months and will likely become even more expensive in 2022. In fact, according to Kang’s article, many food manufacturers plan to raise prices in 2022. “There’s nothing immune from price increases,” Tony Sarsam, CEO of food retailer and distributor SpartanNash Co., told Kang. Research firm IRI estimates that food prices will rise an average of 5% in the first half of 2022. Food manufacturers attribute the rising prices to higher wage, material and freight costs. And if you plan on drowning your frustration with the higher costs with a glass of wine or a mug of beer, know this: Wine, beer and liquor are also likely to get more expensive, especially if they are imported.
