Between 2000 and 2021, the percentage of students of color in public schools statewide rose from 9.7% to 26.1%. But the percentage of K-12 teachers of color increased from just 1.8% to 2.8%. Gov. Kim Reynolds announced a $9 million teacher and paraeducator apprenticeship program this month. Relying on federal coronavirus relief funds, the program will support high school students who want to earn a paraeducator certificate and associate’s degree, and will assist paraeducators who want to earn a bachelor’s degree.
