Des Moines Register: Pressure to address teacher demographics in Iowa is mounting as the state’s student population continues to diversify. Between 2000 and 2021, the percentage of students of color in public schools statewide rose from 9.7% to 26.1%. But the percentage of K-12 teachers of color increased from just 1.8% to 2.8%. Gov. Kim Reynolds announced a $9 million teacher and paraeducator apprenticeship program this month. Relying on federal coronavirus relief funds, the program will support high school students who want to earn a paraeducator certificate and associate’s degree, and will assist paraeducators who want to earn a bachelor’s degree.
