Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames has received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for Health Care. The public, nonprofit hospital was one of six organizations chosen nationally for recognition by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Baldrige is the nation’s only presidential award for performance excellence, recognizing organizations and businesses for innovative solutions to complex challenges, visionary leadership and operational excellence. Baldrige judges evaluate organizations in seven areas: leadership; strategy; customers; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce; operations; and results. Among Mary Greeley’s performance indicators were 30-day readmissions, 30-day mortality for heart attack patients and incidence of preventable blood clots. Additionally, more than 75% of inpatients and outpatients would recommend Mary Greeley to others, representing top-decile or near-top-decile levels. An independent panel of judges reviewed the evaluations performed by the Baldrige Board of Examiners and recommended this year’s award recipients from a field of 26 applicants.
