About half of Iowa’s assessed waterways listed as impaired in biennial DNR report
Des Moines Register: About half of Iowa’s waterways assessed over the past five years are considered impaired, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported Friday. The report, updated every two years, shows 751 rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs and wetlands across the state fail to meet state requirements for one or more functions, such as supporting aquatic insects and fishing or recreational use, including swimming and boating, the state reported. It’s about the same number of impaired waters the state reported for 2020, when nearly 60% of the 1,300 assessed waters were found to be impaired.
