Smash Park, the self-described “eatertainment” venue in West Des Moines, plans to open two locations in the Twin Cities market in 2023 and 2024, the group announced. Smash Park, located east of Jordan Creek Town Center, opened in 2018. The business combines eating and drinking with playing games like pickleball, bocce ball and bags. Smash Park owners began planning the expansion of the eatertainment venue before the start of pandemic. In December, Smash Park owners sold the West Des Moines property to a New Jersey-based investment company for $8.5 million. Smash Park is leasing the property, and money from the sale is helping pay for the expansion. Smash Park CEO Monty Lockyear said the Twin Cities are an ideal market for the venue. “There is high interest in pickleball and a shortage of quality indoor courts,” Lockyear said in a prepared statement. “When we also considered the local demographics, competitive landscape, and our offerings, we felt we had a lot to bring to the Twins Cities market.” The Smash Park venue will have 30,000 square feet of indoor space to house pickleball courts, craft food and drinks, a 21-and-over “Paddle Club,” ax throwing, duckpin bowling, a private karaoke “Sing Suite,” events, and live music. Outdoor space will include a patio, rooftop bar, televisions and yard games. Construction on the first venue is anticipated to begin this summer, pending finalization of the land purchase. Exact locations of the two venues were not released. Smash Park has a venue in Omaha; a third venue is opening this spring in Pella.
