NOTEBOOK – ONE GOOD READ: Futurist predicts 3 biggest disruptions to how we’ll travel

BY JOE GARDYASZ: Here’s an interesting Fast Company piece just out this morning in which futurist Devin Liddell makes some bold predictions about how today’s often gridlocked transportation systems could be reimagined through three “superpower” trends. One tantalizing picture of what a new “digitally native infrastructure” might look like, Liddell writes, is “pop-up” airports that use augmented reality to replicate navigational markings on temporary 3D-printed runways, and computer vision systems for managing tower operations remotely. “That kind of impermanent, virtually managed airport is necessary if we’re to meet the demand for air travel in just the next few decades — especially since passenger volumes cycle seasonally and spike for specific events like the Super Bowl and spring break,” Liddell writes.
