DART riders who have a bicycle can board a bus for free during the month of May as part of the National Bike Month celebration. Anyone with a bike can ride for free on Local, Express, Flex, On Call and DART on Demand Services. Erin Hockman, DART’s chief external affairs officer, said National Bike Month is an opportunity for people to try multimodal transportation by biking and riding DART. “We encourage residents in greater Des Moines to bike to work, school or any destination during National Bike Month,” she said in a release. According to the release, loading or unloading a bike on a DART bike rack takes less than 20 seconds. Riders should also let the bus driver know before boarding that they have a bike, and to let a driver know before they exit the bus that they need to unload a bike from the rack, the release states. The Des Moines Street Collective is the local host of National Bike Month, and additional activities can be found on their website.
