“If we’re to understand why they leave and what employers can do to retain them, we must address the issue of ‘non-promotable work,’ ” Linda Babcock and Lise Vesterlund write in an essay for the Wall Street Journal. That work includes things like onboarding a new employee, taking notes in a meeting or serving on an internal committee, they wrote. This work is even more often asked of women of color. This contributes to the reasons that many women left jobs during the pandemic. They also pointed to examples of women wanting work that made them feel fulfilled and gave them a good work-life balance more than they were concerned about higher salaries. But employers can do something about it. For example, one company realized that employees helping others was not reflected in their performance evaluations, so they began tracking it.
