Des Moines Register: Safety regulators are requiring meatpacking giant JBS to follow experts’ plans to prevent future virus outbreaks — but not in Iowa. Company officials have settled cases with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration related to COVID-19 outbreaks that infected hundreds of JBS workers across the country in 2020, the federal agency announced. But the settlement, announced Friday, does not apply to the company’s Iowa plants in Council Bluffs, Marshalltown and Ottumwa. Iowa runs an independent OSHA agency, conducts its own investigations and reaches its own settlements. Unlike federal regulators, it did not cite meatpacking plants for any actions or deficiencies tied to COVID outbreaks.
