A West Des Moines company is converting a former hotel in Nevada, Iowa, into affordable rental housing, with the units being available as early as this fall. WB Realty has taken ownership of the Budget Inn and work to convert the building into apartments is underway. A housing study commissioned by Story County in 2020 found that Nevada would need an additional 206 units of rental housing by 2040 to meet the needs of the community’s growing workforce. Nevada Mayor Brett Barker said the 36-unit apartment building will help to meet the housing needs in the community of about 6,700 just east of Ames. “We look forward to these housing units being available yet this fall,” Barker said. Ryan Wiedenstein, owner of WB Realty, said the plan is to convert the former hotel into studio apartments that will be available for rent in September. “We are grateful for the support we have received for our project from the city of Nevada and the Story County Housing Trust Fund,” he said.
