The West Des Moines City Council approved a resolution supporting the redevelopment of Valley West Inn into supportive housing.

The resolution of support for the project was approved unanimously without discussion. The item was included on the City Council’s consent agenda during its meeting Monday. Items on the consent agenda are considered routine business and approved with one vote unless a council member asks that an item be removed for further discussion.

Greater Des Moines Supportive Housing, a nonprofit group that provides housing and services to people facing housing barriers, is considering purchasing the property at 3535 Westown Parkway that includes Valley West Inn. The structure was damaged in a fire last fall and is in need of repairs.

According to city documents, Greater Des Moines Supportive Housing requested up to $2.84 million to help purchase and renovate the property. That would have been about 13% of the project’s total estimated cost of $21.8 million.

In its resolution, the City Council agreed to provide up to $840,000, which documents show is the minimum match amount needed for Greater Des Moines Supportive Housing’s applications for funding for the project.

The funding will come from the city’s Workforce Rental Housing Program and Woodland Hills Tax Increment Finance district.

The group plans to apply for funds from other sources, take on $2 million in debt, and raise $1 million through a capital campaign.
