It has become the norm for large tech companies to expand their reach beyond computers and cell phones into new industries, and Amazon’s acquisition of One Medical, a membership-based primary care practice, is its biggest one yet in the health care industry. NPR reports that the acquisition is a sign of Amazon moving into physical health care services in addition to its digital offerings. Amazon launched a pharmacy delivery service in 2020, a 24/7 text and video telehealth app in 2019 and stores health data for hospitals and health systems through Amazon Web Services. With a digital and physical presence in health care, some experts are wondering and weighing the effects of Amazon integrating all the services into one platform. There’s no way to know yet, but Dr. Matthew Sakumoto said with the services Amazon is offering, it is possible. “I think it’s going to be tough. I think even currently these pieces exist in silos kind of within Amazon’s ecosystem, but if they can pull it together, I think it can offer a very holistic experience that we’ve really been missing in U.S. health care,” he said.
