A two-story white structure has sat on the northeast corner of the construction site of the new federal courthouse for more than three years.

The roof of the structure – referred to as the “White House” – and siding have now been removed. In addition, the air conditioner, furnace, doors, windows and plumbing fixtures have been taken out.

The materials will be reused on other job sites or donated to housing-related nonprofit groups, Ryan Co. US Inc. officials have said.

“We have such a small job site here that the trailers we usually use wouldn’t fit,” said Brad Thomason, senior project executive, construction, for Ryan. “We built it together so it could be dismantled easily.”

John Jarvey, retired chief district judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, jokingly called the structure the “White House” and the name stuck. Officials at Ryan named conference rooms after rooms in the actual White House, such as the Oval Office and the Situation Room.
