The 22,538-square-foot building, constructed in 1997, had been used as a grocery store. The store closed several months ago. In 2019, the property was valued at $1.2 million. The transaction was recorded on April 14.
Josh Daggett, lead pastor at Living Water Fellowship, in an email to the Business Record, said the interior of the former grocery store will be remodeled and the church will move into it.
In related action, the Des Moines City Council on Monday approved a request from Daggett to rezone property at 3161 S.E. 22nd St., where the church currently meets. The 1,224-square-foot building has had several uses over the years, including a sweet shop and laundry and bakery and restaurant.
Daggett, in an email, wrote that a day care was going to purchase the building at 3161 S.E. 22nd St. currently used by the church but the buyer pulled out of the deal for several reasons, including COVID-19.
The council, on a 7-0 vote, approved the zoning change and waived the second and third readings of the ordinance.
