Urban Outfitters, which describes itself as a lifestyle retailer, is expected to open its first Iowa location next fall at Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines.

The Philadelphia-based clothing and accessories retailer applied for a building permit last May; the application was recently approved, a West Des Moines spokeswoman said. The permit is valued at $568,000.

Randy Tennison, Jordan Creek’s senior general manager, confirmed that Urban Outfitters plans to open a store in the center.

“We are very excited – we finally got the lease executed,” Tennison said. “We’ve been working on that for about a year now.”

Urban Outfitters could not be reached for comment.

Urban Outfitters, a publicly traded company, has 269 stores worldwide including in Omaha, Kansas City and the Mall of America in Minnesota. One of Urban Outfitters’ brands – Anthropologie – has a store in Jordan Creek.

Urban Outfitters will occupy nearly 8,500 square feet of space on Jordan Creek’s upper level near the newly opened Von Maur department store. It will be located in space that had been occupied by Journey’s Kidz, Halberstadts and Lucky Bamboo, Tennison said.

Journey’s Kidz has been relocated to a new space, and mall officials are working with the two other retailers on new locations, Tennison said.

Urban Outfitters “is a store we have a lot of requests for,” Tennison said.
