Vermeer Corp. plans to open a new manufacturing operation in Des Moines in February, the company said in an announcement Tuesday.

The Pella-based manufacturer has leased existing manufacturing facilities at 1835 N.E. Broadway Ave. off of the Interstate 80/35/235 northeast mixmaster and across the street from the headquarters of EFCO Corp.

A Vermeer spokesperson said in an email that it is a multiyear lease with an option to extend.

The Des Moines operation will focus on building critical components that Vermeer equipment uses when it digs into the ground to install infrastructure, which will allow the manufacturer’s Pella operations to focus on “whole good” production, a news release said.

“Our headquarters and the vast majority of our manufacturing footprint is on land my grandfather, and company founder Gary Vermeer, used to farm. It’s where we started. It’s our home. And we will continue to invest in our team and our facilities there,” Jason Andringa, Vermeer president and CEO and third-generation family member, said in a prepared statement. “However, as demand for Vermeer equipment continues, we continue to explore and grow our ability to produce more.” Jason Andringa, Vermeer president and CEO and third-generation family member, said in a prepared statement.

Andringa added that Vermeer equipment is in higher demand due to events such as natural disaster cleanup efforts or government investments in infrastructure. Vermeer manufactures agricultural, underground construction, surface mining, tree care and environmental equipment.

The company plans to hire 60 to 80 new employees for the Des Moines operation. Hiring is underway and two walk-in hiring events are scheduled for Dec. 16 at the DMACC Ankeny campus and Dec. 19 at the DMACC Southridge campus, both from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
