Des Moines City Manager Scott Sanders, late this morning, issued a statement in response to a council member’s comment that she wasn’t informed that the police station would be relocated to a downtown office building officials are considering purchase. On Monday, the council approved an agreement to buy an office building at 1200 Locust St. that previously had been occupied by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. The five-story building would be occupied by several city departments as well as the police department. Council member Indira Sheumaker voted against the agreement, saying that during conversations with city staff about the proposed purchase, no one mentioned that the police headquarters would be relocated to the building. Sanders was not immediately available for comment earlier today. Late this morning, he issued this statement: “It’s disappointing and frustrating to hear a council member claim they were not briefed about the details of the proposed purchase of the Nationwide building at 1200 Locust St. Meetings with individual council members are regularly conducted every month by the city manager’s staff. Additionally, discussions with council members about the urgency to relocate the Des Moines Police Department’s headquarters were held well before the Nationwide property was even considered an option.”
