25 new projects underway in Des Moines area, including new Microsoft data center, West Bank headquarters

Commercial building permits valued at nearly $371 million were issued in July for new projects in the Des Moines area, including construction of a data center in Microsoft Corp.’s Ginger East project and West Bank’s new headquarters, a review shows.

In all, 25 permits were issued for new commercial projects in the 14 jurisdictions surveyed by the Business Record.

Between Jan. 1 and July 31, 145 new commercial building permits valued at more than $1.17 billion have been issued by the communities.

Highlights from July’s commercial building permit review include:

• A permit valued at over $265.4 million that was issued for the construction of a 184,596-square-foot facility on Microsoft Corp.’s Ginger East data center site at 3655 S.E. Soteria Ave. in West Des Moines. Plans for the data center became public in fall 2020.

• A permit valued at $33.5 million that was issued for the construction of West Bank’s new headquarters at 3330 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. The four-story, 62,000-square-foot building is being constructed on about 7.5 acres south of Valley West Mall. The building will include areas to entertain customers and host events, including an outdoor rooftop terrace. A lower level will open to a patio that overlooks a new water feature surrounded by trees.

• Permits valued at more than $4 million that were issued in Waukee for the construction of two single-story day care facilities – one for children and the other for adults. The adult day care building, located at 801 N.E. Venture Drive, will be 9.613 square feet and include a canopy on the west side of the building for a drop-off area. The children’s facility at 831 N.E. Venture Drive will be 12,836 square feet. An outdoor playground is planned adjacent to the facility.

• A permit valued at $900,000 that was issued for tenant improvements at the Financial Center, located at 666 Walnut St. in downtown Des Moines. According to construction documents filed with the city of Des Moines, Iowa Legal Aid will occupy the space. Improvements include the addition of 42 private offices, four management offices, eight workstations, three conference rooms, a break room, a mothers’ room and a reception area.
