34 new projects underway in Des Moines area, including 8 multifamily developments, football/soccer stadium

In all, 34 permits were issued for new commercial projects in the 14 jurisdictions surveyed by the Business Record.
Between Jan. 1 and Aug. 31, 183 commercial building permits were issued for new projects in the Des Moines area. The value of the new permits totals more than $1.29 billion.
Highlights from August’s commercial building permit review include:
• Three permits issued for the construction of 39-unit apartment buildings (renderings at right) generally located south of Northwest Sunrise Drive and west of Northwest 10th Street in Waukee. Each permit was valued at $8 million. When completed, the development by Town & Country Manor Development Co. will include three-story apartment buildings, a clubhouse and seven two-story townhouse buildings. Also planned is an outdoor swimming pool and dog park. All of the residential units in the development will be leased, according to information provided to the Waukee City Council.
In addition, permits were issued in Johnston for an apartment building at 5509 N.W. Johnston Drive; in Ankeny for a 14-unit building at 1117 S.W. Des Moines Lane; and in West Des Moines for two 30-unit buildings at 655 S. 88th St. and a 66-unit building at 6135 Village View Drive.
• A permit issued for the construction of a new medical clinic at 2900 University Ave. The site is part of the Drake University campus. Drake is partnering with Broadlawns Medical Center on the project. The 12,000-square-foot center is replacing Drake’s student health center. The new facility will also serve area residents. The building permit was valued at $11 million.
• Permits issued for a stadium project being developed by Drake and the Des Moines school district. The stadium, which will host football and soccer games, will be located at 2405 Forest Ave. A permit valued at $3.5 million was issued for the 3,500-seat stadium. A permit valued at $1.5 million was issued for the restroom facilities; one valued at $477,000 was issued for the ticket booth.
