A  new grant program has been announced that is designed to reduce language barriers in the workforce. According to a news release, the Iowa Language Learners Job Training Program, announced Wednesday, is designed to provide programs to teach English to improve communications in the workplace. In the release, Gov. Kim Reynolds said the program will give employers the resources to offer or expand English language training. She said it will break down barriers that may exist to successful careers and support job recruitment and retention efforts. A total of $5 million in grants will be awarded. Applicants must be employers or groups of employers with at least 25 full-time employees who are expanding or creating a language program. Beth Townsend, director of Iowa Workforce Development, said the program will help employers find the skilled workforce they need and help employees who are interested in improving their communication skills at work. Applications are due by 11:59 a.m. on Dec. 2.
