Skate DSM announced that it will continue its “Get on Board Project” in 2023, providing free skateboards, helmets and instruction to eligible Des Moines-area children in grades K-8. The program, which aims to remove barriers for future skaters and promote physical and mental health, will distribute up to 300 free skateboards to eligible students in Polk, Dallas and Warren counties. The equipment will be handed out at events throughout the spring, summer and fall of 2023. Kids who applied for the program in 2022 but were not awarded equipment may reapply. The program is funded by community sponsors, including Virginia Lauridsen, who has been supportive of the growth of the skating scene in Des Moines. Interested students can apply for the program at SkateDSM.org/GetOnBoard.
