Nearly $212,000 is being provided to schools and nonprofit organizations through Meta Altoona Data Center’s Community Action Grants program, the data center giant announced. The company, known more familiarly as Facebook, has a large data center complex in Altoona. The grant program was created to address needs of cities served by the Southeast Polk and Bondurant-Farrar school districts by putting the power of technology to use for community benefit, connecting people online or off, and improving STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education. The 2023 grant recipients and the amounts they received include: Altoona Public Library, $10,000; Bondurant-Farrar school district, $27,500; Children & Families of Iowa, $15,000; Children and Family Urban Movement, $5,000; Class Act Productions, $7,000; Delaware Elementary School, $12,500; Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa, $10,000; Iowa Child Advocacy Board, $6,450; Mitchellville Community Center, $4,000; Pursuit of Innovation, $10,000; Science Center of Iowa, $15,000; Southeast Polk school district, $76,500; and Swerve Outreach (Altoona Kids Cafe), $12,850.
