Iowa Cubs fans will notice a big change at Principal Park when this season kicks off at home on April 18. Earlier this week, the venue’s 10-year-old scoreboard came down to make room for a new digital scoreboard. (Rendering shown above.) The upgrade, which will cost roughly $1 million, was necessary, said Iowa Cubs President Sam Bernabe, due to the old one becoming outdated. “It was not only outdated – it was really outdated,” Bernabe said. “We couldn’t repair it because they don’t make parts for it anymore.” The new scoreboard – 24 feet tall by 68 feet wide – is comprised of one large video screen that will enhance both video quality and resolution. Advertising will also be displayed on the new screen. In addition to the new scoreboard, Bernabe said camera equipment throughout Principal Park was updated to improve the viewing experience for fans who watch games online. Bernabe said installation of the new scoreboard will start the end of this week with an expected completion date of April 1.
