Miller releases details of Chase settlement

Iowa’s share of a multistate restitution by Chase Bank USA and Chase BankCard Services Inc. will be nearly  $1.5 million, which includes $1 million in attorney’s fees to Iowa as the lead state attorney general’s office In the case, Attorney General Tom Miller said in a release. The $136 million joint federal-state settlement, as reported this morning, includes an agreement by Chase to reform its unlawful credit card debt collection practices. “In many cases, Chase stacked the deck against consumers by pursuing or unleashing collections cases based on information that was just plain wrong or even false,” Miller said. Chase has agreed to cease all collection efforts on more than 528,000 consumers, including an estimated 1,329 in Iowa. Attorneys general in 47 states, with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, participated in the suit.
