12.7 million enroll for health coverage through Obamacare exchanges

197 wordsAll Latest News, Health and Wellness, InsuranceAround 12.7 million individuals bought health insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s exchanges during this year’s open enrollment period, the third held under Obamacare, the Washington Business Journal reported.
Of the 9.6 million who enrolled in plans through the federal HealthCare.gov exchange, which covers individuals in states that don’t operate their own exchanges, more than 4 million are new customers, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ report.
In Iowa, 55,089 individuals bought coverage through the state’s federally facilitated exchange during the open enrollment period of Nov. 1 to Jan. 31.
This year, the average consumer using HealthCare.gov had more than 10 insurance companies and hundreds of plans to choose from.
The HealthCare.gov exchange also did well with young adults, signing up 2.7 million people between the ages of 18 and 34 this year. A higher percentage of these young adults were new customers this year.
HealthCare.gov enrollees also were better consumers this year. About 70 percent of those who got coverage for 2015 came back to the exchange this year and actively selected a plan for 2016, instead of simply re-enrolling in the same coverage. Last year, only half of HealthCare.gov consumers actively selected a plan.
