The Waukee City Council has decided to forgo a special election and turn instead to an application and appointment process to fill a seat recently vacated by Shane Blanchard, who resigned after serving more than six years. Blanchard said in a letter that he was vacating the position for personal reasons. The partial term on the five-person, at-large City Council expires Dec. 31, 2017. Interested candidates, who must be residents of the city, can fill out an application here or obtain a printed copy at Waukee City Hall, 230 W. Hickman Road. Applications must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. June 23. Candidates may be asked to present their qualifications and motivations for applying for the appointment at a special June 27 Waukee City Council meeting. The City Council will vote on the appointment during its regularly scheduled meeting on July 5. The council decided the application and appointment process would fill the open spot sooner than a special election.
