Siobhan Spain was kind enough to take time out of helping create one of Des Moines’ most elaborate spaces for artists — the 164,000-square-foot Mainframe Studios at 900 Keosauqua Way — to join us for a discussion of all things culture and arts. While she was here, she mentioned a bit of a milestone at Mainframe. Workers have started installing 62 new windows in the upper reaches of the five-story building. See for yourself.

“I’m happy to say that renovations have started, with our new windows going in on the fourth floor, which is very exciting,” said Spain, Mainframe’s director. Artists should be moving into the facility by April, she added.

A study several years ago found that 425 artists in the area were active and 75 percent had no studio or were working from home, Spain said. Dozens of studios are planned in the building.

“I am giddy that we are creating a space where art starts, a place where people can work under one roof, where they can cooperate,” Spain said. “We have game developers lined up. We have illustrators, painters who are internationally acclaimed, we have photographers who are in commercial work and fine art. We are going to have a shared use commercial kitchen, ceramicists, metal workers, glass blowers.”
