As cases of influenza and hospitalizations have continued to decrease throughout the state, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines, Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines and Broadlawns Medical Center have each ended restrictions on visitors at their facilities this week. “It’s indicative of what we’re seeing in the Polk County area,” said Dr. Kelly Reed, a family practice physician with The Iowa Clinic in Urbandale, who said flu cases continue a downward trend following a spike in early January. However, several more months remain in the typical flu season, and officials encourage using precautions to avoid spreading illnesses. Preventive measures include frequent hand washing or use of hand sanitizing gel, covering coughs or sneezes with your arm or shoulder or a tissue, and getting the flu vaccine.
