Three Des Moines institutions on Thursday launched a pilot program designed to give talented high school students a pipeline to higher education and employment in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The 35 high school students from Des Moines public schools participating in the inaugural STEM Explorers program gathered on Drake’s campus for the kickoff. The program involves Des Moines schools, Principal Financial Group, Inc., and Drake University.

Participants were chosen based on their math skills and financial need, said Drake spokesman Aaron Jaco. Drake students who are studying in STEM fields and have had internships at Principal will mentor the high school students. When the Explorers graduate from high school, they will be considered for admission to Drake, with need-based financial aid. If admitted, they will be given priority consideration for internships at Principal, where they also may seek employment after earning their degrees.
