Venture capital firms raised $4.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2013, bringing their total for the year to $16.6 billion, VentureBeat reported. According to the National Venture Capital Association and Thomson Reuters, the fourth-quarter figure represents a 12 percent increase over the third quarter. However, the fundraising seems to have been a bit more consolidated, as the number of funds raising money decreased by 21 funds to 185, quarter-over-quarter. For the firms that did raise money, 14 new funds were established and 34 funds got follow-on financing.
