Astronomical society to view Venus transit on Tuesday
The Des Moines Astronomical Society is inviting people to join them in watching an event that won’t happen again until 2117, a phenomenon called Venus transit.

The once-in-a-lifetime event occurs when Venus’ orbit passes directly between Earth and the sun, causing a small black dot to move across the face of the sun.

The society and the Science Center of Iowa will have telescopes with solar filters near the “Shattering the Silence” sculpture on the Capitol complex on Tuesday, June 5 from 5 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., when the transit will end.
